Uploading pixel art made by someone else is worse than tracing

NanoKatty 2/18/2024 03:31 am 347

This post is made purely for people who do this in an effort to make them realise that it's still art theft. Good people do bad things. A lot of good people do bad things without thinking it's bad.

Pixel art is an art form, just as much as it is drawing. And as someone who's been taking digital drawing commissions for over 4 years now, it makes us just as disappointed as stealing our "real" art. Not only is stealing other peoples work or using it as a base wrong, it's worse than tracing because it's not just stealing part of it but the entire work.

How many times have you seen the same few rehashed stolen patterns clog up the voting page? Because just last week a piece of pixel art made by my friend was ripped from his twitter and pasted here. I won't disclose which one or who made it because they sound young with the excessive "zomgz" and the "xdddd 2008core lawlz invader zims" and I don't want them to get the pitchfork treatment on a forum that seems to be their home. I know you're reading this but I really would like you to know that I don't hate you, you're a kid and you made a slip up. Lesson learned, everybody hug.

Before I start my next section, I need to stress that Crumpet is absolutely not to blame for this. Even the amount of patterns that aren't pride cuffs for the millionth time is still way too much for her to list, even more so considering that she only has time on weekends. The fact that this site is even up (without ads!) today is astounding to me. This website is not only a labour of love by Crumpet, but all the incredible moderators who make this possible for us!

A few months ago I saw a bundle of stolen patterns I recognized get approved and I decided to use reverse image search to find more. Originally I wasn't gonna bring this up but seeing one of my best friends hard work being stolen just made me feel the need to. There was 53 patterns, 19 were stolen. 35.8%.. 35.8% is an ***obscene*** amount. And no I'm not including things like sprites from games.

Before you upload something think:

Is this not your own work? You don't need to upload it

Has this been made a million times before? You don't need to upload it.

Is your pattern a work in progress? You don't need to upload it.

Is your pattern a sprite from a game? You don't need to upload it.

Is your pattern just a scribble? You don't need to upload it.

Don't upload it, make Crumpet's life and the worlds artists life a little easier. Goodnight, and remember: Peace, Love, Unity and Respect.

@Crumpet: Oh god yeah. I completely forgot I have an ad blocker enabled, I'll set it to turn off here. I always wondered if you had some crazy paying job or something, can't believe that flew right over my head!

@xeviant: When I first started doing pixel art I referenced a lot, I think that goes for any art form. There's this weird stigma around using references for art but it's just impossible to have that knowledge of how something should look immediately. I don't think using an image to trace is wrong unless it's art, lots of people do that with digital drawings as well.

@xXNo_One_Cares_BearXx: Your stuff is really cool! I only mean stuff from independent creators, not pop culture or companies.

whenever I use a reference for a pattern I always try to give credit if the pattern is approved. idk if I should delete those patterns tho ; is using image to trace or reference wrong? But I agree that blatantly stealing someone’s pixel art is never right

I often use the approval by percentage button. So it'll highlight ones that may be approved. And I quickly look through them but it is hard to see what is just a reupload or copy.

I have been trying make sure I'm approving things regularly but I know sometimes things slip through the cracks when it comes to people posting the pixel\perler art.

Thanks, yeah it's annoying and it's difficult for mods to spot stolen patterns sometimes. I believe Peanut is actually doing most of the approving right now. I have been offline more often for various reasons and am only getting back into it, but most of my time goes towards site fixes and support messages.

Without ads though? Do you have an ad blocker without realizing? This site has a lot of ads unfortunately, because it costs several hundreds of dollars a month to keep online (with costs continually increasing), which I couldn't afford on my own; I literally don't currently have that much extra cash per month after I cover my own living expenses. Without ads, it absolutely would have gone offline years ago. Plus the ad company we use keeps screwing with the formats and adding new ones. I disable the most annoying ads when I notice, but it's a constant battle. Because of the social nature of the site, the more reputable ad companies don't want to work with me.
