4 kids play a game that ends the world with the goal to create a new much better on

if you want to understand homestuck, you just gotta read homestuck. all of it. no skipping to act 5, no skipping the intermission, no skipping anything, just go from the start and read it. it's really tedious and takes a while to get good but there's no amount of explaining that will cover everything in an understandable way. to get through the tedious beginnings, there's a let's read on youtube that's really good and goes through act 5, if audiobooks are more your style (all the characters are voice acted too so it's basically a podcast).

4 kids play a game. the world ends. they find out that other people have played this game, and it's been messed up for a while now due to previous players and their issues with their sessions. entire story is about trying to beat the game and survive maybe. other things too maybe. also the other people who played it were aliens with a vast array of social issues and prejudices of their own. the aliens manage to be friends despite (or theyre sort of a mess but thats what being in a world that exists solely based on memory for years upon years does to you) there's also people antagonizing their game for one reason or another. everyone is a pawn in the story and the narrative will not let you forget it etc etc im going to claw hussie for what happened to some characters in particular
