I would just like to clear things up from my perspective cause yall were pretty mad about the fishnets and striped shirts thing lol. I hope we all can live in peace with ome another in our own unique subcultures <3
I think most of you know that emo and goth arent the same thing, right? I mean, as an elder emo, I used to be outraged when people called me a goth kid! And from what I've seen , goth kids dont like being called emo. Using correct terms makes a person feel validated and respected, while misusing it can do the opposite.
I think this is slightly similar to the dispute with scenecore. As we know it was an attempt to revive the original scene culture, but it ultimately turned into its own thing. Scenecore kids do look up to us scene kids, as we are their forefathers lol. But scene kids often get angry when the term scene is misused. I think this extreme gatekeeping at the heart is the fear of having our original scene subculture become lost to the past. I honestly think we gatekeep subconsciously because it is keeping our culture alive.
And as much as I support keeping the OG scene alive, I hate that we force younger generations to "choose a side". I wish I had all the answers to settle this ongoing feud; the only advice I can give to subdue this issue is to:
1. Research on your subculture before you post. And for those already in the subculture, DONT SCOLD newcomers and following generations! Respond in a loving way!
2. Avoid using style #tags when posting. It is 100% okay to say, "I am wearing ripped jeans and a hello kitty shirt with lots of kandi ." Not using a label honestly gives you freedom in your fashion.
IDK if this was helpful, but i thought you all could learn something from an Elder lol. Share your thoughts below if you agree or disagree!
