Basic TTRPG ingredients:

1. The DM

2. The players

The players come up with characters and fill out profiles with their classes and abilities. You have a set number of points that you have to distribute among their characteristics. So if, say, you put all your points toward strength, you can be killed with a small rock. You can also use premade characters from the game publisher.

The DM uses a module (pre made by the publisher or written by the DM) that outlines your adventure and environment. It can take an hour or a year. This gives the players their goals and tasks. The DM often has maps, pictures, and documents to help tell the story.

Action is determined by characters decisions, and rolling dice to determine outcomes. "You hear a low growl from the darkness," the DM tells you. You say, "I have the best night vision, let me roll for perception." If you get a high roll you can see the bloodsucking monster in the corner, and can plan how to fight it. If you get a mid roll you can sorta tell it's an angry animal. If you get a low roll you can't see crap, and it gets the jump on you.

Different DMs have different styles. Mine lets us treat the whole thing like improv and will often change the story if he likes what we're doing better. Others stick strictly to the modules.

We usually play Call of Cthulhu, and I have been a housecat, a very stupid racist private eye, a television technician, a schoolgirl, and a wastrel in need of quick cash.
