Why are Americans so bad at geography?

As an American myself, I'm surprised at how bad Americans are at geography. I'm no geography expert, but I do think that I have some knowledge of it (mainly countries) and I understand that it's kinda difficult, but some people don't know that Africa is a continent and not a country or that Turkey is also the name of a country (its technically Türkiye but whatever). I'm surprised that some adults probably can't name 3 countries that start with S (ex: Saudi Arabia, Suriname, South Korea). It just makes me so mad how dumb Americans are, especially zoomers. At this point the future is doomed bc of the short attention span, lazy, annoying, and idiotic kids who are going to end up running this country. (sorry for the rant at the end 5148b8c8996e8_sick.gif)

I have an excuse!! I was NEVER taught!! /srs Like how I was never taught how to pronounce words or numbers! O! Or spell! /srs

Haha I moved so much I missed all of the basics of geography! I get countries and states and continents mixed up all the time, its not ok- First off I had a horrible PK teacher, Who told us stuff you really shouldn't tell to kids, I also missed 2 months for 1 grade because I got snowed in, Oh and in the 2 grade I was failing and the school systems sucks, And I moved in the 3 grade, till like.. 5 grade. So I was taught stuff that was below or over my level! And I got retaught a lot of stuff-

yeah it just makes me mad... like seriously nobody knows what Kyrgyzstan is. And Bhutan. And Equatorial Guinea. It bothers me how people don’t know what should be basic knowledge...

I think it's because the school system and curriculums don't think it's essential to our learning, but on the contrary it is. The only reason I'm pretty good at geography is because I had to learn it on my own time per my parents request, but it seems everyone else is not bothered to learn shrug. But I think in part it also has to do with people being so centered around America and how that's the only thing they should learn about because it's not like they are going anywhere besides their home. But I could be wrong shrug

They literally never taught geography in our school system even though every classroom had a map.

i don't have an answer as to why, but i'd like to recommend everyone who's bad at geography go play the original carmen sandiego game because ngl it helped my immensely learn about geography, time zones, etc.

part of it could definitely be traced to the quality / pacing of our education, but it probably has more to do with the general cultural mindset many americans grow up with and never bother to actually unlearn.

we live in such an "american-centric" world—the US has been a global superpower in terms of political and economic influence for decades; our products, media, and culture are very widespread. so if you grow up here, it's easy to feel like the US is basically the center of the world, or even the only place worth thinking about—especially if you grew up in a more isolated / less diverse area, e.g. the rural midwest vs a major coastal city.

we're also only bordered by canada and mexico, so the idea of existing alongside other countries is more abstract and less intuitive. contrast that with other continents, which often consist of many countries all densely packed around each other—and often politically, culturally, and economically interconnected in very material ways for the people who live there. so if you live in france, you kind of HAVE to know that spain is over there, and italy is over there, and belgium is up there.

combine all that, you have a whole lot of americans who don't really think about the rest of the world, who think global culture should cater to THEIR american sensibilities, and who would confidently say, "why should i have to know or think about other countries or where they are on a map? that's not relevant to me."

as a american myself, its usually because we're taught geography in the 7th grade/8th grade. We don't pay attention in that class cause its mad boring and we end up struggling. It's like when people were learning fractions/multiplication tables and didnt pay attention. I still struggle with stuff like that just cause i had undiagnosed ADD lmfao

Even I consider myself absolutely abysmal with geography, but it is sometimes lowkey funny to see how many "grown and educated" adults can't even point out some simple countries ;-; wacko
