I use 1mm cloth-covered. But plastic string in different thicknesses can be better for charms and panels, and tying toys to cuffs. You get a feel for what's best for different uses. Plastic can be hard to knot - learn to tie a proper square knot (easy!) and YANK. Some artists recommend melting the knot with a lighter.
