Your chain makes me think of a beaded crochet spiral stitch. The beads in that stitch are more close together. It's also difficult if you're awkward with crochet too.

It's a minimum circumference multi stitch, like a very long narrow bracelet. You start with a ring of six beads, and add on to it. I worked by building it around a pen, lightly tugging the string through each bead to remove slack. When you remove the pen, it will relax some and become a soft rope.
