i think i might be autistic but im too afraid to mention it to my parents (i also have been suspecting that i have adhd for like a year and a half but this isnt about that) what do i do????? i really want a proper diagnosis but idk how they would react to me even bringing it up 513b55c740178_kao_sick.gif i looked at a few sources and have seen/met autistic ppl either online or in-person and i relate to their experiences a lot!! i just dont know how i would tell my parents i think i have autism because theres this little kid who lives across the col-de-sac from us whos autistic and they might be like "well you were never like her as a kid" (even though i sorta was, i was just less social because anxiety and also everyone has different experiences) so idk 2.gif if anyone has some tips please help me out!!!!!

@boyflux: i'm in the exact same situation (esp the cishet nt gifted kid part) )): i've been researching for around four months and i can't tell which one either. i brought up the possibility that i might have adhd to my mom and she just said "no you don't" and "it's just a label, don't label yourself" (which is interesting since my brother is diagnosed w asd and they can be similar in some ways) soo yeah maybe writing a paper is a good idea for me

i hope everything is going well for you !! //g

I think that you should do a LOT of research. because some ADHD and Autism experiences are similar. if you still think you have it, talk to a school counselor if you can. if you have a therapist outside of school, talk to them instead. when I was getting diagnosed with ADHD, I didn't even realize and my therapist gave me a screening and was like 'please god get on meds'. always talk to a professional first. good luck happy

I'm autistic , I was diagnosed relatively late and I went through the same thing you're going through now.

I would recommend looking at the DSM V criteria for ASD and writing down the symptoms you experience , whether currently or in the past. The DSM can be hard to understand at times , so it helps to also read about autistic people's experiences and different ways symptoms can manifest. I did this and presented the paper to my parents so they could understand my concern , it might help your situation.

I think it's normal to be worried about talking to your parents about this , but if you are very worried about your parents ignoring your concerns , it could help to consult a school counselor or a therapist , if you have one. They cannot officially diagnose you , but they can refer you to people who can , and help you talk to your parents about this. Best of luck rainbowsmile

i woould recommend talking to a therapist or counselor about it! they may not be able to diagnose you or give you a proper screening, but they could maybe help you figure out the possibilty of you having autism before you go to your parents about it! screenings do cost a lot of money in some places, so it would suck if your parents paid for a screening for u just to turn out neurotypical.
