Site Suggestion: Variations

ok so I've noticed that a lot of space in pending patterns tends to get taken up by variations on the same pattern. Typically this is flag variations for different identities, and since there's a near countless amount of identities and their flags, it can really take up a lot of space and make it more difficult to vote for other patterns. So what if there was a system where u could upload a pattern and have variations on it that would be contained to the same pattern? Like you click on the pattern and there's a little sidebar with all the variations of it that the creator made?

I feel like this could make voting a lot more efficient and take up so much less space, plus would allow for lots of cool recolors and slight design changes a pattern creator might like to have but wouldn't want to upload as two separate patterns. Idk how to implement this, but I think it could be a cool idea!

After speaking to the owner of braceletbook.com (who is very nice btw), the feature Pancakeghoul described is actually quite different to what braceletbook has. I don’t want to have variations across the whole site like braceletbook does (like all Hello Kitty patterns grouped, for example). I only want to group related patterns by individual users (like a set of pride flags). Also, braceletbook programmatically compares patterns to list the variations, and that’s something I don’t have the time nor skill to do. I think I would also have to change how all 168,000 patterns are stored for that to possibly work…. Yikes, no thanks. At least not right now >.<

I’m still considering this as a feature, not 100% sure I’m going to do it, nor sure what I will call it. But I’m certain that it won’t be like what braceletbook has, if I do it.

@Pancakeghoul: feel free to share the other ideas if you want. You can message them to me. I have limited time to work on the site though, so I doubt I would use more than one idea. If I go ahead with anything I will give you credit somewhere

@Crumpet: no, I didn’t get this idea from braceletbook. I guess it must be a common idea if it’s on that site too, haha. This wasn’t the only suggestion I had to reduce pattern clutter on the site, I just thought it was the one with the most potential. But I totally understand you wanting to ask the owner if it’s ok to use that idea. Thank you for taking it into consideration!

Hey, this is an excellent idea. It’s doable and I have an idea of how to do it. It would require quite a bit of work though and there are things that would have to be taken into consideration.

I’m a little bit concerned now that someone has mentioned this is a feature of braceletbook. Did you get the idea from braceletbook? Even if you didn’t, I don’t want to rip off features from another site, especially since braceletbook isn’t a massive site and variations aren’t a common website feature. I might have to ask the braceletbook owner if it’s okay for us to have the same feature.
