@crystal1zing: i'm not trying to be mean, this purely for safety concerns but if it hurts, they shouldn't be doing it! even with a custom binder, you really should take it off if it becomes painful at any point. just one sports bra works as well as two (as someone with a bigger chest who tried to use two).

@Okuajub: okay so my friend (sabine, genderfae, she/her) used the sports bra technique but instead of just having the bras directly on her skin she wore an undershirt and she said it works pretty well and really helped it not be as painful

Hey!

i'm a transgender person as i wear also binders and have a bigger chest then normal. And i end up on this site https://www.f2mbinders.com/ you can order a binder with your chest measurement. You can know the size taking a measuring tape and with arms down on side, take a snug measurement around the fullest part of your chest.

I heavily suggest against layering sports bras themselves, as the elastic bands can be even tighter than a binder and potentially hurt your ribs! be safe.

the binding technique that im using until i can get a binder is just layering up sports bras. it seems to be the only non-binder technique that’s relatively safe, as long as you follow the same rules as a binder (ie: wearing for 8 hours at a time, not sleeping in it, etc)

@Okuajub: that is absolutely amazing, thank you so much. theyre both asleep right now because its pretty late but ill tell them in the morning- also ill help them look for thicker sports bras because i found out that the ones they have are quite thin, and ill def tell them about the masc clothing!! (by the way, i tried the sports bra way and i was completely flat, it was amazing!! i think its because i naturally have a smaller chest) thank you again!!

KT Tape is not safe for binding! neither is trans tape. Sorry, but we're just not designed to use a product like that without potentially hurting ourselves. KT Tape in particular heavily dissuades the use of their product on chest tissue, and Trans Tape is essentially KT Tape, but targeted towards trans people in particular.
currently, the safest method known for binding is using an actual binder, such as one from GC2b or Underworks, but i'm assuming they don't have those options?
so, with that binding method not available, the next best thing (that is safe) is what you've already recommended- sport bras. for this to work, you kind of need to have a lot of layers on (e.g. tank top, t-shirt, jacket, and coat) which isn't very safe in summer unless it's relatively thin layers. what i suggest alternatively are button-downs: they help a lot of trans-masc people to get by! them, along with cargo shorts and other "masc" clothing may help them pass?
and this is more advice for you, but make sure to let them know that despite how well they think they pass, whether they pass or not does not make them invalid as their gender, and that you will accept them as they are.
