@SorbetMango111: they aren't made for neurodivergent people, actually! that's a very common misconception. they're just commonly used by neurodiverse folks. xenogenders are just basically an experience with gender that is outside the realm of human understandings of gender. many neurodivergent people feel as though they are outside the human experience with everything, which is partly why it's common in our communities, but they are not made for us specifically. /info

genders specifically for neurodivergent people are called neurogenders, which are actually a completely different subcategory of "alternative gender experiences". (i don't mean to make this more complex than it has to be, the mogai community is just one that is very close to me and this kinda thing feels important)

if you need someone else to tell you if something's valid, there might be a problem with the way we think about. stuff. on the internet. here is a pretty decent carrd explaining xenogenders and why people might identify with them.

Xenogenders are genders made for neurodivergent people (but some can be used by everyone) to explain how their gender feels!! Not everyone feels completely connected to the concept of having a gender and that’s where Xenogenders come in!! They can explain how their alternative gender feels like for someone!!

Example; I’m Pupgender!! This doesn’t mean that I’m literally a dog/pup, but it means I feel like my gender can be explained as puppy-like and energized, sweet and innocent!!

Obviously I think they’re valid because they help me feel more comfortable with who I am and explain how I my gender feels like :3

I hope this helped!

a bit off topic, but..

I'm an adult and I've noticed it's mostly younger gen Z kids that tend to identify themselves with xenogenders. (not that adults can't too!!) it seems similar to otherkin sort of?

I personally don't fully understand it and feel a little out of the loop too, but it's so interesting to me and I love seeing people being able to express themselves in these ways and I'm fully on board with it heart bounce

I've found you don't have to understand everything in life to support the people around you, but I think your curiosity and interest in learning is so special and beautiful in its own way. we are so lucky to be living in this Era.

thank you for this thread and thank you to everyone who comments to educate us!!!hklove

The simplest way I can explain it is a descriptor of someone’s gender that is more abstract, & relates to a thing or a concept. Xenogender users may identify with other genders as well, or solely said xenogenders. For example, someone can identify as male while also having a xenogender be part of their identity. From what I’ve seen, their meanings can either be literal or very abstract. Someone who is catgender may literally identify with “cat” being their gender, while someone else may identify with their gender just being catlike in some way.

I think the concept of gender envy also ties into xenogenders. Certain concepts or things may make someone feel more affirmed in their gender for whatever reason, so they incorporate into their identity.

Most people say that they are made for neurodivergent (usually autistic or adhd) people, & while it seems the vast majority of xenogender users are neurodivergent I think that everyone should be allowed to use them if they find comfort in them.

Are they valid? I don’t think anyone has a place to say wether they are or are not. How someone identifies isn’t anyone else’s business, however, I personally do not have a problem with them & support them. I think it’s great that people are coming up with terms to make themselves feel comfortable in their identities. The biggest thing I see people complain about it how xenogenders will make people not take the trans community seriously, but the thing is people will still be transphobic whether or not xenogender users exist.

it’s for nd people! Nd people can’t quite grasp the concept of gender sometimes so they choose to label what they consider their gender. cheer Hope this helps somewhat

as far as i know, xenogenders are genders based around a thing, concept, or interest someone likes. i think they're valid, some of my friends have xenogenders, and it's just like, a new way to express yourself yknow?
