@3DG: not my point. bringing up the no true scotsman fallacy is ridiculous when people have been saying that accommodating rightist views makes you a fake for decades. being apolitical (how people in this thread are seeming) does nothing but allow others to be oppressed by whoever has authority to do so. (eg. the person implying hating cops is silly) i was only speaking on this thread specifically, which looks to be mostly suburban kids who are still under the effects of the red scare.

@WATERPARKS: how on earth does "sometimes talking about politics stresses marginalized people out" = "i oppose leftism" ? plus as far as ive seen no one in this thread said they opposed leftism at all. my point was that people who have shitty political opinions will always be part of subcultures, whether you think theyre not "really alt" or not. distancing the alt scene in your mind from people you deem undesirable doesnt make them dissapear. its better to accept that shitty people will sometimes identify in ways that you do and no one can stop them nor do they care if people think theyre "not really xyz". saying that "no punks are racist/right-leaning/homophobic etc" wont stop bigots from being in the punk scene, regardless of if they get punched or not

@3DG: i dare you to go up to an old punk and tell them that you oppose leftism and still call yourself alternative

people don't like talking about politics because it can lead to a lot of arguing and hot water in general. as someone who's autistic with "weird" special interests, there's a community for everyone. just look on discord servers and stuff based around your special interests, but be careful. like the other commenter said, avoid propaganda and stuff.

While I understand that it's your special interest, you shouldn't shame your friends (or anyone) for not wanting to talk about politics. Politics are heavy, complex, intense topics, and often people don't understand (or don't feel safe sharing) their views on certain things. Politics are depressing and frightening, and often times remind oppressed groups about their oppression. Most kids don't fully understand politics either, so it might be that they don't want to talk about something they aren't well versed in.

Generally, politics aren't really frowned upon in alt. communities. Many alt communities started with anarchist-esque origins. Some are swamped with right-wing neonazi garbage and some are rampant with radfem shit. There's also the pitfalls of being political in these spaces, as you either develop echo chambers of people agreeing with you or you end up in fights with other people because they disagree with you.

(Side note that centrists aren't apolitical nor do all centrists dislike politics. Centristism literally just "I disagree with too much of the left and the right (or consvervatives/liberals; republican/democracts) to feel comfortable being a part of either "side".")

TL;DR: Most people don't like talking about heavy, complex, oftentimes negative things and there's nothing wrong with that. Unless that person is an activist, in a political space, or in a debate with someone, they shouldn't feel pressured into discussing these things.

I'd recommend getting into political spaces if you want friends to discuss politics with. Be careful not to create an echo chamber or fall prey to ideology or propaganda, though! If your current friends don't want to talk about politics, then make new friends that do. You can keep your old friends (who don't like talking about politics) while also gaining new ones (who do)!

people don't like talking about politics because a good portion of people don't want to get into arguments with others. They don't talk about it (possibly) because they don't know much about it, and People prefer not to argue about things that have little impact on their life. We aren’t going to solve the welfare system here, so why argue about it. imo, politics is just a fancy word to make other people hate each other.

The alternative community stemmed from the first punk movement which was very political. (not tryna say those who don't like politics aren't alt I just find it weird). So usually goth or punk people will be down to talk about politics. (goth might be iffy tho).
