If You're Autistic

CoolBeans 9/15/2022 09:52 am 1032

I'm 18, I know for sure I have undiagnosed ADHD and have known for a while, but the thought also occurs to me that I could also have autism (along with the adhd). I find myself relating to what a lot of autistic people say they feel (taking things too literally, trouble with eye contact, cannot stop talking about my interests, etc.), but I also know that doesn't automatically make me autistic and that its a very broad spectrum.

So my questions to those who know they're autistic: Are you diagnosed? If not, how did you know you were autistic and at what age did it occur to you?

Edit: Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to reply here, and for the advice, all of your messages were very helpful and insightful! I haven't come to a definite conclusion (I wasn't expecting to-- but maybe someday I will). I have done more research because of this thread, and I still think I could be autistic, but I also think there is an array of things that could make me neurodivergent and more than just ADHD. Like I said, I haven't come to any conclusions, but I'm okay with that right now, and I think I'll just continue to be as I am.

Well I got diagnosed with adhd at 6 years old, but my parents and brother have adhd too and I've always had kinda a worse time dealing with it if that makes sense? Like my sensory issues are wayy worse than everyone else's and I go mute a lot (these are just a few of the things that stand out to me the most) But I started learning about it more about 3 years ago and I think it's very possible I could have it too or just be autistic, there are more reasons why but I could write an essay on it lol

@Caitlynn: I think I get what you're saying, 2/3 of my family (besides myself) also most likely have adhd but weren't properly diagnosed. But I also have sensory issues that the neurotypical one in our family just doesn't understand. And I was definitely described as a "problem child" for most of my childhood, much more "difficult and sensitive" than my brother even though we both have adhd (he was almost diagnosed but a doctor told my mother to see if he'd "grow out of it". Spoiler alert: he did not).

But I feel the same as there are many reasons that I think I could be autistic, but am not totally sure. Personally I was never really nonverbal in times where I was expected to talk, maybe a couple of times, but mostly its just the opposite where I cannot stop talking. I only really started learning about it a year ago but I have had many openly (as in, directly stated they had autsim) autistic friends in the past.

(btw, thank you for responding, its very interesting and helpful to hear the perspectives of others!<3)

@CoolBeans: Yeah sensitive is definitely something I've been called lol, my mom likes to tell this story about how as a baby at the beach I would scream every time she put me on the sand XD

Autism & ADHD can come together but also there is a lot of overlap with the two! Im diagnosed but it took a long time (18 too) i would walk on my toes all the time and i can only use tiny spoons. i would say to interact with other autistic people online to learn a little more about what you do relate to, but try not to let confirmation bias get in the way! either way, as long as you learn what you need to do to avoid burnout etc thats whats important :3

i can't walk out side barefoot at all! I literally go nuts!!!!

But I can't afford the tests to make sure if I'm autistic!

And yes I have ADHD since I was 7yo!

And all my therapist and doctors I have seen ask if I have been diagnosed with autism! But like I said... Can't afford the tests and insurance won't cover it!

I was diagnosed with high functioning autism during my early childhood after not reaching the milestones required for my age. (I was 4 years old and non verbal, struggles with social skills and eye contact) I didn’t realize i had autism till i got older and did more research and asked my mother did i truly have autism? She said yes, and so does my brother.

@tony_maroj: omg yes the walking barefoot thing, I literally cannot stand feeling any particles on my feet at all and I have to walk on my tiptoes everywhere
