this was not the result of a drama or anything, I just see A LOT of people hate on it or group it up with pro shipping without knowing what it's used for/what it is/why it exists and it's pissing me off ngl. It's no one here so don't worry too much =
I'd like everyone to know this is a dark topic. Tw: Rape/ non-con, abuse (emotional, physical, and psychological), graphic depictions of violence, blood/Gore, kidnapping, pedophilla, bestality, incest and death. None are discussed heavily but they are mentioned. There's no way to get around those topics if you do read this so please take care of yourself. There will be a TDLR at the bottom if you're still curious and don't want to read this post in full/ want a censored version.

Whump vocabulary you should know to continue:
Whumper: The Abuser/kidnapper/emotional manipulator/etc.
Whumpee: The Victim/ survivor
Caretaker: The Whumpee's support system/ the person who takes care of Whumpee
Drabble(s): A small work that's purpose is to vaguely outline a story/ simply a small work (not exclusive to Whump)

What is Whump?
Whump is a genre in fanfic (mostly on tumblr), that's closely related to dead dove:do not eat. Unlike dead dove it does not include things like pedophilla, bestiality, incest Ect. Whump is mainly focused on trauma, either the recovery or the source of the trauma. Things like medical gore, sick fics, kidnapping, emotional and physical abuse, and enslavery are all common topics. Whump and Dead Dove are not at all the same thing. Do not categorize it as such.
Where did Whump start?
I'm not exactly well educated on the history of Whump as a genere, although I do know its popularity is centered mostly on tumblr. It seemed to start out as a vent type of format before evolving into a genere that explores the process of mental decay through abuse and the recovery from it.
Why Is Whump important?
Whump, from an outside in prospective, is simply seen as another community romanticizing abuse and trauma, but from the inside it's very very different. One thing that I can't deny is that there's heavy themes of abuse in the drabbles you'll find there. Another thing that I can't deny is the community prides itself on being as true to life as possible.
One of the core brags for authors who write Whump is realism. The whumpers might be bold and loud but the whumpees, compared to my experiences, act exactly as they should. The sheer terror that authors illustrate, the way the brain trauma bonds with their abuser, and the simple fact that a main trope in the community is medical accuracy should be worth something. Why would a community centered around being horny for trauma go the lengths to be so true to life?
Because of the realism it gives people who have experienced severe trauma a place to explore their traumas safely. From rape, to torture, to medical trauma, and to emotional manipulation, Whump gives an realistic and safe experience for people to work through those traumas. The reader can control everything right down to the personality of the whumper. It also gives a safe environment for the people who have intrusive thoughts. Seeing something in its unfiltered horror and the agony of the mind makes intrusive thoughts a lot less appealing. It's a coping mechanism and a very good one.
I will say there is a section of whump that focuses on gore and how taking care of those wounds can bring people closer, romantically or platonically. Not all Whump is super graphic, as another huge part of Whump is the healing from severe trauma or sickness.
Like every community there are those who make questionable choices and poor decisions and with a dark community like this one, you definitely need to see the people doing it with respect to see the full picture.

So yeah stop lumping pro shippers/ anti antis and Whump together. They're not at all similar.
TDLR: Whump and de@d d0ve are not the same, not even close. Whump got most of its popularity from tumblr and heavily features @bus3 and is a community that heavily values realism. Whump is not romanticizing @bus3 and is mostly used as a coping mechanism. It's also not all completely graphic.
