tips for how to dress punk ethically and cheaply!

punk culture and fashion is my new hyperfixation (have always liked it but i like it alot more now) so i felt like writing this then i was like oh i can put it on here lol

FIRST, DO NOT SHAME PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY FOR BUYING FAST FASHION!

WHAT KIND OF COMPANIES TO AVOID:

i get stuff from amazon sometimes if its really cheap and i'm basically out of cash but it's better to shop at other stores. try to stay away from amazon because other stores pay their employees better, and even though jeff bezos isnt gonna run out of money either way you should support businesses that are giving their workers living wage and not just minimum wage (i cannot believe that it's legal to not give people enough money for FOOD WATER AND SHELTER), and definitely avoid corporations that dont give their workers a living wage when they can afford to give them one.

STORES TO GO TO:

hot topic is a good store! they donate some of their money to mental health organizations too. the stuff can be SUPER expensive sometimes though. thrift stores are also good, since it's cheap and is much better for the environment, although it is harder to find clothing that looks punk. Redbubble is an ethical store where artists can sell their own designs. the seller decides the price but there is a minimum price on everything since redbubble manufactures the shirt. it is a very popular website so it is very likely that you'll like a lot of the stuff on there. If you don't want to buy a design from someone else i am 99% sure it is possible to make a design and then make a different account and buy it from there. You'll still be losing money if you do this since some goes to redbubble but it will be cheaper. if there aren't any thrift stores near you you can buy stuff from ebay or facebook marketplace. You can get stuff from etsy as well, but be careful on sites like aliexpress and especially wish since there are so many scams. however if you want bootleg clothes, aliexpress is a good place to go since reviews are more likely to be real than wish so there's less of a chance that it's actually a complete scam and not a bootleg. people who sell bootlegs without stating that that it is one obviously aren't the best people but they're likely to be desperate and at least the money is going to someone who needs it more than a billionaire. if you want combat boots, get ones used! i got doc martens for 40 dollars and they were COMPLETELY BROKEN IN ALREADY which is honestly WAY better than getting new ones and having to break them in yourself as long as you're fine with a few scuffs. Demonias are very expensive so if you like how they look get a knockoff or boots that look similar. Sadly it is very hard to find affordable platform boots for size 4 and under. i eventually had to get ones off of amazon and they are still a size up. If you have height dysphoria or dysmorphia it's VERY WORTH IT though so I have 0 regrets and i recommend getting platform boots if you want to be taller, even they are off amazon. Band t-shirts are also very good because you will probably seem punk even if you aren't wearing really any other punk stuff, especially if it's a band people have heard of like my chemical romance or the design or name of the t-shirt just looks very punk or alternative. It's also pretty good for meeting other people that like the same music you do! cargo pants, leather jackets, and jean jackets both look punk, especially ones with patches that have to do with punk or just stereotypical alternative things and being accepting of all people no matter race religion gender or sexuality, or things like hating those who aren't (as you should). jean jackets and cargo pants are pretty easy to find, you could definitely get them at a local thrift store unless they don't fit. clothes that are morbid looking (things like skulls, blood, knives and ghosts) look more alternative in general which includes punk.

ACCESSORIES AND MAKEUP:

also, it's possible to look punk or just alternative with just accessories and makeup. a 20 dollar shirt that you wear every few days isn't really as good as a purchase as several accessories that total 20 dollars that you can wear every day. for makeup you should prioritize eyeliner and eyeshadow. liquid eyeliner is better to get precise lines with and looks way cleaner, but if you're going to use a lot of it for a more emo looking style you NEED to get fast drying eyeliner so when you open your eyes after you apply eyeliner to your top eyelid it won't smudge, unless you're fine with having your eyes closed for a while. i use some red lip liner on my eyelids since i need to get red eyeliner and it stays for SO LONG but i'm not sure if it's bad for your eyes even if you don't get any in your eye and it's just on ur eyelid because eyelids are really thin, so unless you know for sure you'll be fine probably don't do that. my eyes seem fine except for the bluriness that was there before but i could just be built different XD. black lipstick is also very alternative looking. fishnets and grommet belts are both alternative looking. chokers, especially the kind with spikes, look very punk. piercings look punk as well, but if you do one on your own it could get infected. You can get your nose pierced at claires for about 20 dollars. You can also get a fake piercing for even cheaper or you can make a fake ring or septum by bending a ring, paperclip or bobbypin. you can also cut a soda tab to make fake septum although it won't look very real. pins look punk but NEVER use a pin to pierce yourself because the metal is not safe and it will most likely get infected. it does look kinda cool imo, so if u want to do that get a nose ring or whatever you want that looks like one instead. hair dye isn't rlly an accessory but idk where to put this: hair dye looks pretty alternative but it is expensive at a salon. get at home hair dye and if u need help dying parts like the back of your hair get a friend to help you. if you have dark hair you need to get bleach first unless you're dyeing your hair black. it's more expensive but if you don't bleach there's basically no point in dyeing. hair dyes like red and pink do not last long at ALL and you will probably need to re-dye it every month. as they fade, the color also becomes orange. your hair can get damaged from being dyed so much so if you want to dye your hair red or pink probably don't dye your entire hair.

PUNK IS DIY:

you don't need to buy clothes at all either since punk is diy. because of this you should totally learn how to sew! hand sewing is slow to do but very easy and not as expensive as buying a sewing machine. that way you can alter clothes you don't really wear anymore to make them look really cool or make entirely new clothes. instead of buying fabric you can use fabric from clothes you don't wear or blankets you don't need. embroidery string is more expensive than regular string, but if you get that kind you can not only embroider but use it as string for kandi, although it isn't stretchy, so using embroidery string for kandi works best on charms. you don't need to dress punk to be punk but its fun to imo

omg i didnt realize how much i wrote-
