What is the joke about Weezer?

I’m old enough to have genuinely enjoyed their music back in the day. Now I’m seeing a bunch of patterns here and a ton of references.

Why are they a meme now? Why that album specifically?

@cerynitisDeer: oof I’m old… I didn’t really see most of their music videos, I mostly heard them on the radio growing up. I haven’t been keeping up with them on socials, so I guess I missed out on some pretty great shenanigans. That tracks tho!

I think it's mainly one of those random things that get joked abt but weezer/ the members have/has done a few things that are funny asf that just fuel the fire

like rivers using a "how lesbian are you" filter on tiktok then deleting the video or them having a collab with fred figglehorn??? Lmao

@Phosfate: SAME!! That 2018 Teal Album era of Weezer was so strange and meme-y.. especially with Finn Wolfhard playing Rivers in the video for their Take On Me cover.. Weezer is just so absurd

I AM A WEEZER ENTHUSIAST!! ID LOVE TO TELL!
Weezer has always been pretty ridiculous! Ever since the music video for Undone! It's a ton of factors!

The video for Buddy Holly was distributed on Windows 95! That sort of "nostalgia" can bring something to meme status easily!
Their music video for Pork and Beans(from the Red album, their fourth album) featured a ton of internet memes from the time (2008)
To advertise their 2010 album Hurley, a ton of internet celebrities(again, from the time, 2010) promoted the album

Now, what i think is one of the memeiest things

In 2018, @weezerAfrica on Twitter made a sort of campaign to get Weezer to cover Africa by Toto, which was a huge meme song at the time, this campaign worked, resulting in a music video where Weird Al plays Rivers Cuomo!

In all, Weezer has always been a super goofy band, this list doesn't even include their shenanigans with Fall Out Boy (aka... FOB vs. Weezer Family Feud special, Pete Wentz playing Rivers Cuomo[dubbed Rivers Wentz] in the music video for Don't Knock the Hustle, Rivers Cuomo being kidnapped by the band in the music video for Heartbreak Feels So Good, the entire Hella Mega Tour)

All these factors sorta bubbled up into the Weezer related memes that are around today!
