How do you add on the zipper? Would you take a needle by hand and sew it in threw the beads or between the beads under the string?

Would you take a needle by hand and sew it in threw the beads or between the beads under the string? i use fishing line and a needle. i go through the beads because the fishing line if you wrap it around the stretch string and pull tight will go right through it and cause stuff to break.
