Any tips for keeping your kandi neat?

I made this little piku charm yesterday but the only problem is that it looks JANKY.

i started with the top head-like part and tied a knot, (the knots i tie always end up really obvious and visible 513b3952760e7_sad2.gif) and then made the legs separately and sort of "sewed" them on at the end with more elastic. It worked, i guess but the final result is really messy and has a lot of parts where string is showing and stuff. Does anyone have any tips for avoiding this?
