it depends, for flat charms you use a template and then iron the beads down to melt them together, for 3d charms you use the plastic string tbh confettipinkheart

i really like this youtube playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-KXetrWhIH... it has a bunch of different charm tutorials and stuffs. i also found vickymuffins and raven does stuff's charm tutorials helpful
