Your school is absolutely screwing up with this autism stuff. They aren't teaching autism acceptance well. The puzzle piece ribbon is very offensive, because puzzle pieces in general are really offensive to autism. This is because a company called Autism Speaks uses the puzzle piece, and Autism Speaks says that autism is a bad thing, and they're trying to CURE it. This is ridiculous, because you cannot cure autism, and there is nothing wrong with autism

Shortened Conclusion: The puzzle piece is a big nope.

Also, the "awesome unique totally interesting sometimes mysterious" thing is super cheesy and cringe.

Maybe you can ask the teachers to replace it with an infinity symbol, which is much better than a puzzle piece. tbh confetti

Mmmmmmm yeah kind of questionable sad the "mysterious" thing is kind of a stereotype I think. And the puzzle piece is a big no no, because a. it was coined by Autism Speaks which is a really terrible group, they treat autism like it's a horrible disease that needs to be cured (which it's a neurological difference so there's no way it can be cured and it doesn't NEED to be, because we are perfect just as we are and there is nothing inherently wrong with us), and they even went as far to compare it to ACTUAL terrible deadly diseases like cancer, b. the symbolism in itself is just kind of wrong, pretty much implying that we are missing a part of our brains, and c. WE HAVE BEEN BEGGING PEOPLE TO STOP USING THAT FREAKING PUZZLE PIECE FOR YEARS NOW. crying

I understand if it's a bit much, but I would suggest maybe approaching the school about it with a presentation with research about why the puzzle piece is bad (and maybe ask autistic students at your school what their stance on the matter is). I would also encourage them to make a better sign with a less offensive symbol (like the rainbow/gold infinity symbol. heck they could keep the acronym just replace "mysterious" with "marvelous" or something like that. bc while kind of cheesy the acronym is mostly okay).

I don't think your school had bad intentions with that sign by any means but... yeah. not great.

Politely ask them to change it, they wouldn't knowingly put up something malicious. I think in these situations it's important to take into account that you have to be online a lot to hear about this sort of stuff since even autism clinics I've been to have had the puzzle motif crying

thepuzzle piece is probably a lack of research, not direct support towards autism speaks but an adult thinking its like the international symbol like the rainbow infinity is. probably just go and inform them that the puzzle piece brings attention to autism speaks and it shouldn't be used with specific reasons why

Wow I didn't know I was a Choose Your Own Adventure sci-fi book! yeah that's outdated.

100% not the puzzle piece is a hate symbol, the infinity sign is the one thats ok :]

idk man the puzzle peice as a symbol for autism came from the group Autism Speaks and they literally just hate autistic people ToT

but uhhhghgmm i think its just an outdated poster, its not that important but still maybe bring that up bc autism speaks is a gross company. (i can add more stuff abt them if you want more info, theyre like weird)

yeah puzzle pieces are a huge no. The organization Autism Speaks popularized it and their actions are actively harming and demonizing autistic ppl (too many to list here lmfao)

As for the words, it’s just kinda more cringy than offensive? Autism isn’t anything “quirky” or “mysterious”

The rainbow infinity symbol is a much better symbol to use when representing autism so maybe try to talk to your school about changing the signrainbowsmile
