tobacco references //

so his name in the swedish version is snusmurmiken. this is a portmanteau.

snus, aka snuff, is inhaled tobacco.

murmik is a term for a usually homeless, eccentric bloke.

snufkin is a pretty reasonable translation for this-

IT MAKES SENSE HES A PIPE SMOKING GAY CRIMINAL OMG I LOVE MOOMIN AGSGDHGSYGD

dump some moomin stuff if you want 4.gif

edit: i will say— PIPO?!?!?!? WILSON?!?!?? HOW FROM WHAT I- 513b39527b090_scared.gif

@Lord_Cookie: i’ve always thought of moominmama/moominpapa as a title more than an actual name honestly happy same with snorkmaiden but it this theory gets inconsistent since snork is just snork

@Lord_Cookie: oh and this is probably easy to guess but the reason why moominmamma and moominpappas names are so long as we dont really have a mum or dad word (i guess mor and far but thats usually for describing relatives, like mormor, grandma on mums side) other than mamma and pappa n some people actually get confused by that, i did when learning as i was wondering why full grown adults were saying stuff like mamma - godforbid

@SleepinqZzz: yup, swedish is a funny language, its a bit difficult w i think the moomin books being written originally in finnish (myth busted: finnish is the furthest scandinavian language from the rest as its closer to russian i believe) so some pun names translate weirdly but: hemulen is also something in swedish:

hemul comes from old swedish hemold meaning "proper, rightful" and the -en suffix means "the proper/rightful" if it was en hemul it would mean "a proper/rightful" however it wouldnt conjugate that way as its an adj - godforbid
