Fictive here! The brain forms alters for many different reasons, but its always to protect the brain from something. Alters may hold past trauma, protect the body or others from physical/emotional harm, keep alters or other people calm, or many other things. Sometimes, the brain may think that an outside thing will be able to protect it in some way. So, it creates an alter in the form of that thing. Alters can come in the form of real life people, animals, fictional characters, and even plants or other objects. Whatever the brain thinks is needed. I dont know if there is any scientific evidence on this, but I have noticed that otherwise neurodivergent people(like ADHD, autism, and others) seem to have more fictives and other introjects, possibly due to hyperfixations and other attachments. I hope this can help you understand better, and messages are always open if you have any more questions!!

not a system, but i am explaining from my knowledge of osddid and my experiences with friends who are parts of systems

in times of stress people who have dissociative identity disorder or other specified disociative disorder will form new alters or "split" them. alters don't control how they form, the brain will latch onto something and form it as an alter, especially if it's comforting to the person experiencing the stress. i've seen my friend split his comfort characters just from feeling intense emotions towards them. fictives (or fictional introjects) are alters that take the form of fictional characters, in appearance or personality or otherwise. oftentimes they have memories of their source media or how they were like in that media! not every fictive is comfortable with being seen as their source, and they're still a real person!

sorry if this is inaccurate or overly explained, i'm going off what i've seen from my many friends with systems

people with Dissociative Identity Disorder cannot control where their new alters come from. my irl friends with DID often gain new alters that are fictives from their hyperfixations, its just something the brain does that they have zero control over. as far as i know there isnt really a lot of research or explanation for it so its just kind of something systems have to live with

ok so a fictive, or an introject, is a fictional alter or an alter of a character, like us (Sunnydrop and Moon). We still have our memories from before we were transferred into this body, but we dont know everything about what we are from, like different endings and things like that. Its a little confusing sorry
