can you use regular string for a kandi mask?

i know fishing line (or something similarly stiff) is recommended for masks, but i don't have any on hand, so im wondering if regular fabric-coated elastic would work? like if you just pulled it tight enough?

i could go get fishing line if it's really the only option for a mask, but i'm lazy and cheap so i'd rather just use what i already have if i can help it lol
