help pls im struggling

i'm trying to make a multistitch cuff and i tied some leftover pieces of string together to use for it. i tied each knot 3-4 times and i was on the second row and it came undone. i wasn't pulling tightly either. this happened twice (the second time i knotted 4-5 times). i'm using fabric elastic string too. does any1 have advice on how to fix this?
