Levels and signatures for the new site forums?

So I was thinking about the forums for the new site.. I know we have these star shaped things on this site to show how much we participate.. but what will show our participation on the forums for the new site? Will we have some sort of level system? I was thinking with every post or thread you make, or even when someone gives your post a thumbs up, you'd level up a bit? I'm talking numbers here.. like everyone would start at 0, and level up with posts and such. Leveling up could get more challenging the higher your level is.. just an idea.. if we don't have anything like that on the new site already. Also I was thinking maybe we could have signatures? Like something we could edit, and fill with pictures, text, etc. It would show up underneath every post, divided by a line of some sort. Also there would be a size limit.. Sorry for the huge post, these are just suggestions and ideas, and I would like to know what you think.

ixlikextrainsxkid, have you ever been an active member of a forum? On forums, "post counts" are like points. They show how active a person has been on a site. People with higher post counts are often considered to be more knowledgeable or more respected (that's not necessarily true, of course). But this is a similar idea. It also encourages people to contribute more content, and makes them feel special when they see their points go up. This doesn't work for everyone though. Some people don't care, and that's fine Other people care too much and try to spam, but that hasn't been a problem on here yet. As for the medals, those are "collectible achievements" http://ui-patterns.com/patterns/CollectibleAchievements Again, the concept doesn't appeal to everyone. I thought they were pointless until I started using a website that had them, and I found myself getting pretty excited when I received new "badges."

Oh, and as for the virtual medals, that sounds really cool to! Maybe pattern uploads could also count as some sort of percentage of level up.. and maybe every view could be a small percentage.

I believe levels with numbers would be easiest. Like levels from 0-100. As for you and the moderators, your level could automatically be 100... To level up every post, thread, or thumbs up could be a percentage of level up, and once your level up hits 100 percent, you'd gain a level. And as your level number gets higher, the level up percentage of each post, thread, etc would get lower. People would have a limited number of "thumbs ups" to give, so that they can't do that to wvery post they see.. if they use them up, they'd have to wait till the next day to start doing it again.. I don't believe we need titles.. there are some sites that let you enter your own title.. but of course the admins and mods have different colored usernames so they are not confused with regular members. I understand it's a lot.. it was just an idea to give.. I know you have a lot to do already.

What do you mean by top pattern, photo, post? The most viewed ones?

I think you should add a "top (photo, pattern, post, etc.)"and levels.

Yeah, the star things basically have to do with levels. I just made the levels too easy and they don't have names. Naming the levels is probably the hardest part. Maybe I should just use numbers? Also I am counting points and you will see an actual number of points. I also want to give out virtual profile medals to people who contribute certain amounts of photos/patterns/videos etc. I don't think the top pattern contributors on here get enough credit. As for signatures, right now (on the new site) I am using the same layout for forum replies and pattern/photo/video comments. But I wouldn't want to have signatures all around because that would slow down the site. So I'd have to make a separate layout for forum replies. The question is: how many features do I add before the site goes live? I've already delayed it longer than I wanted to add/change more things. I wanted it to be tested and up by now :/
