Using names of asian descent is bad?

before I begin this I would like to say please don't answer if you're not asian, although you may put in your input if you'd like.

So I saw this person on TikTok saying that its disrespectful to use asian names if you're not asian, because they have different meanings, and I just wanted to make sure its true bc you know TikTok isnt always a trusted source and google isnt giving me any answers.

I've been using a few asian names (ie kurama, neko, reiko, meraki) and if this is true then I'll change them

I'm half Asian and I've lived in asia for over half my life.
I think it's ok if you're using it because you like the name and you understand what it means, not because it's aesthetic sounding or just because it's an Asian name.

If i flip the scenario around, I know many Asian people that have western nicknames, my mum has one, classmates at school had them. I am aware that there's a different reason behind why they have nicknames and that a lot of western names don't have as much meaning behind them.

I personally would find it sorta strange initially if I found out that someone who's not of Asian descent was using an Asian name but that doesn't necessarily make it bad? (Tbh the fact that I expect that person to be Asian because of their name is probably not the best way of thinking, but it's genuinely what I would first think)

Im half asian, and personally I think its disrespectful if you use the names as a "cutesy anime aesthetic", but if you truly understand the meaning of the name then it should be ok.

i'm half asian, although i think you meant specifically east asian which i am not (i'm half indian). from what I'VE heard the vast majority of asians say (also from my own personal thoughts, as it's decently common for white people to use indian names), i don't think it's okay, because a big part of why someone who's not asian would want to use an asian name is because of fetishization/romanticization whether intentional or unintentional

(i think) it could also definitely be called a form of cultural appropriation
