for reference i do think you made the thing sideways. if you want that staggered look i would recommend using a multistitch pattern / tutorial that way everything is fully connected when you finish

i don't know how you'd connect the ends because theyre both flat and possibly the same height, but you could always take a piece of elastic and run it through the top two and rows (and another in the bottom two) that way its held in a cuff shape? looks like its going to be pretty wide though. worst case scenario i would start over and start with a multistitch next time
