Inspo or copying?

RubyLuvsPlur 1/7/2025 12:02 pm 516

So I notice that sum kandi makers wanna say that using photos as spo can be copying. So for example with Mood Kandi's burger cuff, a completely original idea, and decided to make that, is it copying? or if i go on pinterest and decide to recreate a cuff is it copying?

I feel like in such a niche community its hard to avoid something that wuz made b4. especially with new kandi makers who may not know enough to make sum creative.

So what do you think? can cuffs/kandi be copied? should we hold people who copy accountable?

@Sarracenia: if someone copied pretty complex kandi from a photo, i'd be so impressed, not singles ofc.

Recreating kandi exactly from a picture is obviously copying, but it’s also fine. If someone has posted an original design and expressed that they do not want it to be copied, then it would be kind of a dick move to copy it anyway and post it where they might see it, but even then it’s not THAT big of a deal, just rude and likely to make them block you. Kandi is supposed to be about freely sharing both patterns and the actual finished products, not about jealously guarding your copyright.

I think if you give credit then its fine, just as long as youre not completely claiming it as your own

Plus theres hundreds of people who have used the same pattern, so its not like its a crime for two people to make the same thing

@RAINBOW_BITE: agreed

just as long as you don’t make a cuff you saw on Pinterest and say “it’s my original design!!” When it’s not then I don’t think there’s a problem!

So long as you aren't taking complete credit for the design, its fine. Mention them by name if you post it online. As an artist myself, I would never be upset if someone was inspired by my work and wanted to create something of their own, especially when its kandi (since the community is heavily based on swapping designs) so long as they mentioned me. I think they understand as a large artist, they will inspire other smaller creators.

Copying/inspiration has been a debate in all artistic circles for literal decades. For as long as I've been online, there has never been consensus on what is and isn't okay. As long as you move forward in good faith and are clear where you found inspiration, no one can be that mad.

i don't think copying kandi is bad, i mean saying you made the pattern yourself when someone else made it, or selling it wouldn't be good, but other then that it's fine! i use other people's patterns and post the kandi on my profile, and no one's upset about it.

I agree with Stamps_the_cringe about not selling the kandi. I think it's perfectly okay to think something that someone made is cool, and want to make it. As long as you don't post anything about it without giving credits to the original creator, it would be fine. also make sure to give credit if anyone asks about it. happy kandi making! :3

I really don't think there's any issue with "copying" Kandi
like *maybe* if selling, but even then depending on the cuff I think its okay,
cause like think of say crochet sellers, you r not gonna tell the HUNDREDS of stalls selling the same chickens, frogs, cows, cats, ect, to stop selling em would you ?
