I just noticed you were asking about how long your cord/string should be. Ooops! Like the previous comment. Take an amount your comfortable with and just tie on more when that begins to run low. Personally I take about 2 or 3 arm's length worth of cord.

I don't know how big you are making it, but work with a length of string you are comfortable with, then tie more on as needed. You may need to tie on a couple times, but it's easier than trying to control the whole length all at once.

Well, if you keep a good pace with it, it'd probably take you a 2-3 days once you know what pattern(s) you want to use for your bag. Always check out the youtube tutorials. There's several up for you to pick your favorite.
