Why is the boyfriends comic controversial /gen

I genuinely dont understand. Of course, I haven't read the whole thing but still. If it's because people see it as "f3t/shizing poly mlm relationships" I can kinda understand but I also don't. Stories abt str8 romances arent like that so why does that apply here? /nm

Again, i'm just trying to understand. /lh

Edit: ok y'all I understand ty /nm /lh

it stereotypes lgbt people and im pretty sure nerd is a self insert character for the author and is also a proshipper. idk though ive just seen ppl talk about it.

@Lord_Cookie: ill add that its weirdly sexual at times and makes it severely uncomfortable, prep wearing cat ears, female prep being an overtly sexual streamer (not that thats bad, sex work is fine its just the way its portrayed), how jock and female jock seem almost trapped at certain points, prep getting drunk and using that to his advantage, nerd being so overly sexual its so gross he even gets upset when they go to the beach and his bfs arent all shirtless and hot etc - godforbid

@GoldenSnailz_: copied from the article, this is everything it says: - godforbid

  • Glurge: Part of the comic's infamy comes from the fact that it's essentially nothing but 100+ chapters of four men being Sickeningly Sweethearts and going on dates. This isn't an inherently bad thing in moderation, and there are a few semi-dramatic turns of events, but reading so much of it nonstop with 0 breaks makes the work feel like a Romantic Plot Tumor that mutated into its own story.
  • Offending the Creator's Own: The webcomic has received a fair amount of backlash from people within the LGBT community who say it plays into stereotypes about gay men, despite the fact that author Refrainbow identifies as both gay and non-binary.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The comic is mostly known for accusations of fetishizing queer men, in addition to allegations of racism made against author Refrainbow in light of various comments they made on their Twitter account a while back. Things that they said at the age of 13 and have since apologized for.
  • Sweetness Aversion: As a slice-of-life romance comic with minimal conflict and a pastel color scheme, Boyfriends is primarily designed to be cute and fluffy. However, this over-the-top sweetness has caused many to view it as boring or cringeworthy.

One of the things that I understand is that there's really just *nothing* going on, and it has the feeling of someone shoving down your throat that "Hey! Look! theyre g@y! and polyam?!!" it feels kinda like pandering in that way, like it's such a big deal that they exist, it's what makes up like a majority of the advertising of the comic too

Nothing wrong with just romance, and I understand I have a different view of such things as an Aromantic person, but there's at least 100 chapters of just that. Much better as just them being ocs and the creator simply just made art of them doing things in their daily life

I don't know much about the author, but I could really care less, the comic is just sickeningly sweet

also not to mention that the creator back in the day did draw a series of nsfw bts comics shipping the band members, but that doesn't really apply here since that was a while agowacko

one of the things ik that ppl talk abt alot is that the creator says that nerd is canonly a proshipper.

Mar 23, 2023 6:35 pm

@pearlsbf: didn't they also draw inappropriate art of bts members while they were still minors?

update, it appears they did, he apologized but that doesn't make it ok

I think its stereotyping poly relationshipsshrug

the creator is a proshipper and made nerd a proshipper as well
