Any tips for beginner dnd payers?

ok so a couple days ago, some friends and I decided to get together to learn how to play dnd. We’re all very excited, and we got someone ~somewhat~ experienced to be our dm (my one friends mom) but like the title says we’re total and complete beginners.
Other than watching youtube videos on it, does anyone have any tips for beginner dnd players?

my time has come.

i am a former dungeon master and i love dnd.

tips:

try not to overestimate how difficult it will be to learn. its a lot less complicated than it looks

memorize the names of the dice (d20, d12, ect.)

use the website dnd beyond for your first character (the options are pretty limited and its easy to use)

i recommend actually trying to roleplay as your character instead of just saying what they do (or a mix of both). it helps bring the game to life and makes it more fun!

remember that if youre reading the players handbook about the rules that none of the rules are set in stone and can be changed based on the dm's discretion and your party's playstyle

you can do oneshot adventures to 'warm up' before tackling long campaigns (oneshots are simple, short stories that usually contain one or two quests. they are usually completed in a single session)
