NOT A VENT

(I'm in 8th grade) i just found out that apparently i only turned in one assignment in social studies so far this year and my parents are pretty pissed, but i felt like i was doing really good sad i'm buying some books on american history and world history so I can study those and i'm getting a couple of missing assignments done right now but idk if it'll do much to keep me out of summer school

i think the reason i don't have anything turned in is because 1. i forget to turn things in when im done, and 2. i get anxious about turning things in because like.. what if it's all wrong and i get a horrible grade and i embarrass myself

and its so weird because i'm not like that in any other classes!! only social studies!!

i need help!! how can i turn this around quickly?

update: tomorrow is my last day being able to use my phone freely as they're putting all of these restrictions on it.. meaning there's a pretty big chance i'll never b able to talk to my bf + my online friends like ever again.. this is fun /sar

Perfectionism & anxiety suck. I’ve struggled with missing assignments for years due to the fear of them not being good enough, & now that I’m a senior in high school I’m finally starting to work towards overcoming that anxiety. I’m sure you’ve heard people tell you to just turn the assignments in since anything is better than nothing (which is very true!!), but it can be extremely hard to rewire your brain to believe & accept that. Here are some things that have helped/reassured me:

- Teachers grade so many assignments, for so many different classes for years. If you get a horrible grade on something, you will likely just blend into the group of other kids who got similar grades rather than singled out

- If the assignments are online, turn them in while you are heavily distracting yourself with something else, like music or tv. Your mind will probably still be on the assignment, but the feelings will hopefully at least not be as strong due to your mind also being on something else

- Make a list of your missing assignments, & how many points they are worth. Normally I would say turn the ones worth the most points in first, but I’d actually recommend the opposite in your case. Turning in assignments that aren’t worth as many points may be less daunting, & can help ease your anxiety with turning in assignments that are worth a lot of points/will affect your grade more heavily

- Try not to beat yourself up for your grades or missing assignments. It sounds like you are trying your best, but other people aren’t seeing that which can be pretty disheartening. Just know that grades aren’t everything, & don’t define you as a person

- See if there are any ways you can work with a teacher or a tutor at the school on your assignments, going over it with someone can help if you are doubting your answers/don’t know what to put

- There are plenty of websites online that have answers to worksheets, if your social studies teacher gets their worksheets online you can likely find answer sheets & go over your own work. Is that cheating? 100%! But sometimes cheating is just what you gotta do to make it through school, & I don’t see it as too big of a deal anymore since many things taught are only being memorized, not learned

- Reward yourself with something you enjoy after turning in an assignment, so you can have a bit of motivation to turn it & satisfaction when you get the reward

That’s all I can really think of for now based off of what you have said, but if you want more tips for specific things you haven’t mentioned lmk & if I have any I’ll share!

hkphoneso this is a study plan i use, but it may not work for you

so spend 30 minutes doing the work that is the most recently assigned. take a 5-10 minute break, then work on the hardest to the easiest assignments. rather than saving the hardest assignments till the end where you’re less motivated, start with them. if i have any extra work than do that at the end

i usually work in 30-45 minute increments and then take a 5-10 minute break,,or use the pomodoto method.

also if your teachers accept late work, make sure you do it. a half grade is always better than a 0

hope this helps!

If you can, try really paying attention in class and taking notes of what the teacher says

just turn as much as you can in and if your teacher doesn’t accept late work just like. Beg for extra credit/ extension on deadlines and tell your teacher that you’ve “been having a hard time with school lately” or something like that. And ask if you could come in after/before school and get help on your social studies.

Even though your parents will be upset and you won’t be able to talk to your friends, keep in mind middle school grades don’t matter. It’s okay if you mess up a bit.

o ! um, so, if your teachers accept late work, turn it in !!!!!!!! anything is better than a 0%. 50%, despite it being half done, is better than a 0!! 0s drop your grade so far down
