Found the thing

"This website costs hundreds of dollars a month to keep online. The services I have to pay for include:

Email (monthly), image uploading (monthly), cloud image hosting (monthly), SSL certificates (yearly), multiple domains (yearly), spam protection (monthly), hack protection (monthly), hosting and backups (monthly), plus IT technician fees when I need server work done and don't have time to do it myself.

I can't afford to pay for all of this out of pocket, so we need ads on the site. However, these ad networks have rules that we have to follow, which include not allowing adult content and language. I'm currently on the hunt for another ad network with less restrictive rules, but for now this is what I have to do in order to keep the site online. Without ad revenue, I'd have to shut the site down.

The list of banned words is ridiculous and I don't agree with it. Obviously, I know that "gay" is not a bad word. But these ad network algorithms associate certain words with porn and dangerous content."

That's Crumpets answer to "why are certain words censored?"

I can't find the page right now, but I think Crumpet said somewhere that she lets ads run on the site to pay for it, and the companies that provide the ads have a list of words that need to be censored because of their association with adult content, such as jack, ass, and unfortunately gay

Not 100% but I think it has something to do with search engines
