it just gets like that regardless or the way you tie it since the problem is the stitch style. Ladders don't stay very organized at all

you could knot it a little looser
or
you could learn to do peyote stitch

yea the peyote stitch would probably work for this better but wat i used to make this was actually gimp so that might have helped it but it all depends.
sometimes they come out nice and flat like this or just jumbled up
