Alex, it sounds like you aren't doing the first row correctly. Click on the pattern image to enlarge it, and you'll see numbers laid over the top. All the beads that say "1" are the ones you need to string for your first row (the single stranded bracelet that you start with). The first row needs to be 30 beads.
