New Site Theme

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of switching the site over to a new theme which is designed to be easier to use and mobile-friendly. I also made some improvements to the site features.

At the time I am posting this I have not yet made the theme live, but I will be making it live within an hour or two (the time now is May 31st, 2:30pm PST).

Major Site Changes:

Search: You can now use checkboxes to filter by multiple pattern types, meaning you can choose to see both perler and mask patterns Pattern categories: Although I don't yet have the same filtering set up for categories, the pattern types you can choose are more specific. You can choose to see things like masks and bikinis instead of just "multi" and "peyote." Many of the text fields around the site have a new text editor, and in some areas the text editor has an image icon which lets you insert an image directly into the body of your text. There are lots of new emoticons!

Pattern Maker:

The pattern maker is still not mobile-friendly but I am working on that and that will be coming next!

Attention mobile users:

If you would prefer to see a desktop-style version of the site, scroll to the bottom of the site and there is a link in the footer which lets you switch to desktop mode.

Have you found a problem or bug?

Look in the site footer. There is a link for Report a bug / problem with the site where you can report it to me.

Is there something from the old theme that you really miss?

I will miss certain things about it too, but unfortunately the design did not lend itself to a mobile friendly design so I had to redesign everything. But if it's a feature or simple style change that I could possibly add into the new theme, I might be able to do it for you! Just comment on this thread.

@krisface21: I've got a printable template for an x-base that is a set number of columns/rows. Here's a link to it. Is that what you're referring to by the x-base pattern? I might be able to add something like that to the free designer but I couldn't add the kind where you can add rows and columns because I don't have that type of access to the code, that's why I am creating an entirely new pattern maker. But the way the new pattern maker works, the x-base wouldn't be possible at first, I would have to add that later on once everything else was up and running. X-bases are quite complex though because you can also have a different number of beads between the Xs, so it would be hard to let people generate their own with a certain width/height. Not impossible, I'm just not sure it is the best use of my time.

I don't know if anyone else had this problem but the mobile menu toggle stopped working on my iPhone, I've added a fix for it and tried to force the update to all of your phones so hopefully it will work now, if not you may need to refresh the page or force quit Safari (or your other mobile web browser).

I'm still getting use to the new layout but so far I like it a lot. The menu works great for me and the light tint in the background makes patterns easier to read.

@Rayven: I'm glad you like it. I'm still seeing a few issues, including one with unwanted line breaks when commenting. and the other at the bottom of the page when you're on a mobile screen; the vote button doesn't display correctly and the user menu header is too tall. So I am working on fixing those next

Some of you might have noticed an issue where if you copy the same pattern into your account twice, your changes to one pattern overwrite the other. I have fixed this. Your duplicate copied pattern will be given a different name and filename. If you still have problems let me know.

However when you are creating your own patterns and saving them for the first time, you need to give them unique names. If you create two patterns both called cat for example, the files will overwrite each other. This issue is in an area of the pattern maker that I don't have access to so I can't fix it. But I'm working on the new pattern maker as we speak and with that one I will have full access and it won't be a problem anymore.

There was a glitch earlier where some patterns were not saving/displaying correctly. I noticed that it was affecting a few patterns in the voting queue. If your pattern image wasn't displaying while in the voting queue, I will reduce or ignore the vote count when publishing patterns.

There's a problem replying to certain messages, working on fixing it right now!

[edit] Should be fixed.

There is/was also a Firefox specific problem with spaces in comments/messages causing line breaks, really odd because I had specifically set the text editor plugin to NOT auto create paragraphs, seems to be a bug with the editor. I'm going around trying to fix that problem now.
