@Crumpet: My coffee cups have yet to leave any marks. Pretty sure I have set bowls of soup on them as well. But I can say for sure coffee and tea is fine.

I've got floppy disc coasters but mine are made out of rubber, not beads.

What happens if you put a really hot drink on these - is it hot enough to melt the perlers?
