@l0c4lw31rd0: Autism Speaks has changed hands and is quite into neurodiversity now, but yes, that's how it started. The founders had a grandson whose parents believed (and still do believe) that he got autism from vaccines. His mother still posts anti vaccine content online, even now. And Autism Speaks has undoubtedly caused long-lasting stigma from their earlier content.

I have an autism diagnosis myself and have been heavily involved in the community, and I am aware that many autistic people don't like this symbol. Most of these patterns were uploaded before the neurodiversity movement became popular. I have chosen to leave them because I personally know autistic people who like the symbol, and most of them have higher support needs. I am very privileged as a lower support needs person, and I don't want to push out their voices by completely removing patterns like this.

But I do think it would be a good idea to put a notice in the descriptions of these patterns (rather than just the comments) so that people know that many autistic people don't like the symbol. Imagine if someone made a puzzle piece for their newly-diagnosed friend without knowing about the problems with it. It could definitely cause some upset. This type of pattern should only be used in a small set of circumstances and shouldn't be promoted. I suspect that over time, the symbol will fall out of favor and totally stop being used.

BEFORE YOU MAKE

This symbol is the symbol of the """""organization""""" @utism Speaks, an """""organization""""" dedicated to """"helping"""" people with @utism. When I mean """"helping"""", I mean creating stigmas relating to @utism, claiming that vaccines cause @utism, and encouraging the eradication of @utism. This is why many autistic people (like myself) encourage the use of this symbol be abandoned when used to represent the autistic community.
